Brandon
Sandefur and Roughcut's debut album, Walking Backwards for brand new
label UndergroundCountry® is proof
that traditional country with a contemporary production make
music that’s both solidly rooted in the past and that looks forward to the next
millennium. |

According
to Brandon
"The album is a collection of songs that I believe
hang together really well. I’ve looked for songs for a long time and written
a bunch with the idea of finding an album’s worth of material that has a united
sound and some kind of a theme to it. The songs that I’ve written or co-written
are all from experience and those outside songs are tunes which mean something
to me." |

At
the core of the album is Brandon & Roughcut,
essentially
guitarist T im
Baumgartner and harmonica wizard Pat Wieckenand
augmented by some of Music City’s finest session
players. The album moves easily and smoothly from the catchy country
rock of ‘Right Between
the Lies' to the souped up Ray Price shuffle
of ‘Now You’re
Tonkin’ to James Taylor style balladry
on ‘Same Old Tear’
and classic country on ‘The Bull’ with it’s loping
melody and clever but poignant lyrics. |

While
so many cutting edge country acts have moved into the alternative country genre
and found some success with oftentimes left field country variations, Brandon
stands apart with
his unique blend of traditional Merle Haggard and Waylon style delivery matched
with some exquisitely tasteful contemporary instrumentation notably Tim Baumgartner’s
powerful but elegant
guitar style. |

Brandon
Sandefur marks himself out as a bona fide artist as writer or co-writer on all
but one of the ten tracks presented here. |
