Color Selection Issues
Next Step The selection of color combinations for use on your site has a major influence on your site's ultimate customer appeal. We have various resources to assist with this process.
While your eyes are capable of differentiating millions of variations in color, hue and intensity, limitations of hardware and software makes the choice of color usage in web site development at once simpler and more complex. There is a "color safe" palate which will be viewed in substantially the same way regardless of which operating system platform (i.e. Windows, Mac) and browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator) the viewer of your site elects to use. When selecting color combinations, remember that you
need to have a comfortable contrast between text and background. Ideally,
you and your designer need to agree on three or four colors (two primary
and one or two secondary or accentl colors). You may want to look at 216 color swatches which displays the basic web safe colors. This page renders the same colors available when using our interactive color picker. If you want to see a page of over 1,500 color swatches you can click here. (Warning: this is a complex page which can be difficult for your browser to load. Your computer should be set to display hi-color (64.000) to view this page. Give the page several seconds to load. If it fails press your browser's back button and you should return here.) In addition to the resources on this site, there are many excellent sources on the web to assist both the "color challlenged" and skilled designers in the use of color elements. Two such sites I can recommend are, ColorCombo.Com (basic) and EasyRGB (more advanced tools). Try using the interactive color picker to see how various combinations of background and text colors look. Feel free to also visit a sampling of client pages from our client page to see what kinds of color combinations you prefer. (Colors are referenced using a variety of naming conventions. Two common formats are RGB an CMYK. Be sure to jot down your preferences using these numbers.) When site colors, general design and copy considerations have been addressed, it is time to select and process graphics for your site. PCMG Consulting can assist you in the creation and/or processing of your images. For a brief discussion of graphic standards and comparison of file formats, click here.
